Montuïri sits on a low hill in the Pla de Mallorca, the farmland in the middle of the island that most visitors drive straight through. There are old windmills along the ridge, a Monday market, and the Talaiotic settlement of Son Fornés with its museum just outside the village. In August the Cossiers dance for Sant Bartomeu, which they have been doing for centuries. Palma is twenty minutes, the airport fifteen, and Es Trenc on the south coast about twenty-five.
The house dates from the 1930s and runs to 160 square metres over two floors, restored by its owner Katharina with old Spanish village architecture left intact and the furnishing kept eclectic. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms, sleeping five, and an open kitchen that opens straight onto the outdoor dining area. The garden is the surprise: banana trees and cacti in the middle of dry farmland, with a small 2 by 3 metre pool, a barbecue, and a Thai bed on the upper terrace looking out to the mountains.
