Twin concrete houses on a Brač hillside

Selca is a quiet inland village on Brač, the largest island in central Dalmatia, known for its pale stone and its long, easy beaches. This part of the island is still working and unpretentious, close to the ferry town of Sumartin and the resort of Bol with its famous Zlatni Rat beach, but away from the crowds. The house sits on a hill with sea views over the archipelago, close enough to the sea to arrange boat mooring or a boat rental, and only a few hundred metres from Selca's shops, restaurants and cafés.

The houses were designed by Toni Trutanić, a young local architect, as two identical concrete twins, a deliberate break from Brač's traditional stone houses with their green shutters. It's an unconventional choice for the island, and that's rather the point: bare concrete walls meet floor-to-ceiling glass, and old carved sculptures from the island's history sit inside the modern rooms. Each house holds a living room, kitchen and bathroom downstairs, with a bedroom up on a gallery level, reached by a striking steel-and-wood staircase, looking out over the pool and the sea.
