Leif Jørgensen works across architecture, interiors and product design, and Mette Bache is a designer too, so the pair have built the thing slowly and in pieces. The Farm House came first and was remodelled rather than modernised, the thatch, the mullioned windows, the low panelled rooms and the plain furniture all left doing what they always did. The Barn House, finished in 2018, does the opposite. It's new, L-shaped, and almost entirely one room, the ceiling opening up to a six and a half metre gable, with a fireplace at one end and a kitchen and long table built for a lot of people at once. Clay plaster, raw concrete and open timber, deliberately set against the old house next door. Jørgensen then designed furniture and fittings specifically for it, which you can now buy, so the house doubles as a showroom for its own contents.

The Location
Odsherred is the northwest corner of Zealand, about an hour from Copenhagen, and one of Denmark's classic summer house regions. The coast is lined with nature reserves, wild beaches and long dune landscapes, and the hinterland is unusually hilly for Denmark, a set of curved ridges left by the last ice age, now a UNESCO Global Geopark, that give you real distance to look at. It's farming country too, the Lammefjord soil is famous enough that its vegetables carry a protected designation, and the light drew a whole colony of Danish painters here in the early twentieth century. Høve sits inland from Sejerø Bay.
