Lokavec, Vipava Valley
Set on a sunny hillside above the village of Lokavec, on the edge of a forest and the nature reserve of Mount Čaven, Konjiček celebrates the panoramic view across the entire upper Vipava Valley, in a region of vineyards, orchards, and stone villages along the western Slovenian border with Italy, with two Michelin-starred restaurants in the valley, hiking and climbing terrain on the surrounding mountains, and the Slovenian coast and Trieste within an hour.
Designed in 2021 by Slovenian architects Jana Hladnik Tratnik and Tina Lipovž of Studio Pikaplus and recognised with the BIG SEE Tourism Design Award in 2023, Konjiček is a 115-square-metre bungalow with a distinctive green flat roof and deep cantilevered overhangs sheltering an all-round terrace, with the living, dining, and cooking area glazed on two sides, three bedrooms facing the forest at the rear, and a restrained material palette of microcement, concrete, and laminated wood, cooled in summer by the green roof and deep eaves without need for air conditioning.
