Monte Abastura

Architecture by Sophie Lallia · Sleeps 4

A renovated 19th-century sheepfold in the hills of the eastern Algarve

Set in the heart of a private three-hectare property surrounded by the hills of the Reserva Natural do Sapal in Castro Marim, in the quieter eastern reaches of the Algarve, Monte Abastura sits fifteen minutes from the untamed beaches of the Ria Formosa, in a preserved region of dry hills, cicada song, and grazing goats, where a south-facing terrace with a cooling pergola faces the landscape and a century-old carob tree shades the spot for a twilight aperitif.

A former late 19th-century sheepfold renovated in 2021 in honour of traditional Portuguese architecture, Monte Abastura keeps its thick stone walls, local terracotta terraces, and timeless cane ceilings, each element carrying a hint of modernity in the carefully selected materials and decoration. Numerous outdoor spaces invite slow days with friends and family, from the pergola-shaded pool facing the hills to the shade of the carob tree, in a house designed to feel immediately like home in a setting where everything invites calm and tranquillity.
